Biography

Dr. Mark MacLean is a neurosurgeon and Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Health Authority. He completed both his Doctor of Medicine degree and his neurosurgical residency at Dalhousie University. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. MacLean carried out postdoctoral training as a Neurosurgery Research Education Foundation (NREF) scholar in the laboratory of Dr. Alon Friedman. He went on to complete clinical fellowship training in neurotrauma and spinal surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine under the mentorship of Dr. David Okonkwo. During that time, he also served on the medical staff of the Pittsburgh Steelers. These experiences developed his interest in brain and spine trauma.

Dr. MacLean’s research has been published in The Lancet and in journals within the Science family. He is a co-investigator and co-applicant on two Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grants. His work centers on translating mechanism-driven, laboratory-based research into clinical practice. His contributions have been recognized with the CIHR–Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction / Canadian Association for Neuroscience Brain Star Award.
